This study was launched in January 2009 and aims to determine the incidence of MS in Catalonia and its evolution over time, to establish whether there is a similar phenomenom of increased incidence in our area, as described in other regions.
It is a population-based prospective study based on the Identification of early symptoms suggestive of demyelinating disease (CIS). Every CIS is monitored over a 3 year period (2009-2012) to its possible conversion to MS. This will determine the incidence at the begining of the clinical symptoms of the disease (onset incidence).
To achieve a comprehensive identification of new diagnoses of MS, we have launched an official MS Registry in Catalonia, with a wide collaboration of hospitals throughout Catalonia that attend patients with this disease.
